4.12.18 Little Red River Fishing Report

The Greers Ferry lake has returned to seasonal pool and we are seeing favorable water release for wade and drift fishing. The weather has finally gotten warmer, trees are blooming along the river and the fish are cooperating. For fly fishing, we recommend gold ribbed hare’s ear, caddis pupa, sowbugs and streamers. Hot pink and orange colored bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for Trout Magnet spin fishing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501.362.5150) for Greers Ferry Dam water release information or check the Corps of Engineers website (swl-wc.usace.army.mil) for real time water release and the Southwest Power Administration website (swpa.gov) to see forecasted generation...

3.29.18 Little Red Fishing Report

As the Greers Ferry lake returns to near seasonal pool, the Corps of Engineers has closed the spillway gates and is regulating the lake level by water release through the two generator turbines. The amount of water release will depend on how much rainfall we receive throughout the state this week. Hopefully we should begin seeing a decrease of water release and more favorable generation/water release schedule as the lake is maintained around seasonal pool. If you choose to fish high water conditions, you will want to use long leaders and weight. Concentrate on pools along the banks away from the strong currents. Key for both fly fishing and Trout Magnet fishing during heavy generation is the ability to get and maintain a good presentation of the fly or Trout Magnet. Working shoreline with streamers is also an effective fly fishing method during high water conditions. Little Red River Fishing Report March 1

Good news is the recent heavy rains have raised the Greers Ferry Lake above seasonal pool level. The bad news is the rains have muddied the middle and lower sections of the river for extended days. We expect to see a more consistent water release of 1-2 units of generation until the lake gets down to seasonal pool. This will create good drift fishing conditions from a boat, but could make wade fishing challenging. Sowbugs, pheasant tails, copper johns and streamers are working well for fly anglers. Pink and white colored Trout Magnets are recommended for spin fishing.

Currently the Little Red is receiving around 2-4 hours of generation on weekdays and lesser amounts on weekends. We anticipate this generation schedule to continue unless we receive significant rainfall from the weather system moving up from the gulf coast later in the week. Midges, soft hackles and sowbugs, along with wooly buggers, are working well for fly anglers. Pink colored Trout Magnets are recommended for spin fishing. We continue to receive 12 hrs of daily generation on the Little Red River with generation beginning around mid-morning. This generation schedule is providing excellent wading conditions on the upper sections of the river in the mornings and on the middle and lower sections later in the day. This generation schedule is also providing excellent drift fishing on all sections. For fly fishing, we recommend sowbugs, midges, emergers and streamers. Red and hot pink colored Trout Magnet bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for spin fishing. We continue to receive 12 hrs of daily generation on the Little Red River. This generation schedule is providing excellent wading conditions on the upper sections of the river early in the day and on the middle and lower sections later in the day. With the water release of two full units of generation, the river will rise quickly. So if wading, be observant of changing water levels and be aware of your surroundings for your safety. This generation schedule also is providing excellent drift fishing. For fly fishing, we recommend sowbugs, midges, gold ribbed hares ear and streamers. Red and Bison colored Trout Magnet bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for spin fishing. The Little Red continues to receive 12 hrs of daily generation. The generation pattern has changed just a little this week with water release starting midmorning instead of early morning. This pattern is providing excellent wading conditions for a few hours each day and excellent drift fishing from a boat. With the water release of two full units of generation, the river will rise quickly. So if wading, be observant of changing water levels and be aware of your surroundings for your safety. For fly fishing, we recommend sowbugs, midges, caddis pupa and streamers. Pink and red colored Trout Magnet bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for spin fishing. Currently we are seeing 12 hrs of daily generation. The generation begins early morning which provides some wadeable water downstream for a few hours each day and excellent drift fishing from a boat. Currently the Greers Ferry Lake level is above normal pool. To lower the lake level, we anticipate longer periods of heavy generation to begin soon. When fishing higher water, use long leaders and add weight to get your fly or Trout Magnet down for a good presentation. For fly fishing, we recommend san juan worms, pheasant tails, sowbugs and streamers. Pink and red colored Trout Magnet bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for spin fishing.
